Duplicating a Drawing

Command

Command Description
ATDUPLICATE_PROJECT_DRAWING Duplicate an existing project drawing with all its data

Ribbon: FireCAD > Edit > Duplicate Project Drawing

Prerequisites

  • A FireCAD project must be open
  • A drawing must be selected in the Project Tree palette
  • The source drawing file must exist on disk
  • The source drawing must not be currently open in AutoCAD

Overview

The ATDUPLICATE_PROJECT_DRAWING command creates a complete copy of an existing project drawing, including all database records — devices, circuits, circuit devices, and segments. This is useful when creating similar floor plans or when you need a starting point based on an existing drawing.

Steps

  1. Select a drawing in the Project Tree palette
  2. Type ATDUPLICATE_PROJECT_DRAWING in the AutoCAD command line
  3. A Save As dialog appears — choose a filename for the new drawing
    • The file must be saved in the main project folder (not a subdirectory)
    • The filename must be unique (no existing file with that name)
  4. Click Save
  5. FireCAD copies the drawing file and duplicates all database records
  6. The new drawing opens automatically in AutoCAD
  7. Labels are refreshed with a full cache reload

What Gets Duplicated

Data Duplicated?
Drawing file (.dwg) Yes — full file copy
Entities (devices) Yes — new database records with same properties
Circuits Yes — new circuit records linked to new drawing
Circuit devices Yes — new connection records
Segments (wirepaths) Yes — new segment records
Device properties Yes — all custom properties copied
Block definitions Yes — included in the .dwg file copy

The duplicated drawing receives a new unique Drawing ID in the database. All entity handles are preserved from the source drawing.

Tips

  • The new file must be in the main project directory — subdirectories are not supported
  • After duplication, the new drawing is fully independent from the source
  • If you need to duplicate a drawing to a different project, export and re-import instead
  • Large drawings with many devices and circuits may take a moment to duplicate
