If you make a copy of the project drawing using 'save as', the new drawing will not be linked to the project file.
The best way to preserve a copy of the project and and keep connectivity is to make a copy of the entire project folder and then date the folder or add a revision number.
All copies of the folder are isolated fully functioning project snapshots.
